Entering another planet

Day 182, India, Laddakh, Nubra Valley, Hunder, Enfield Day 1

I start my trip after breakfast. At the petrol station I fill the tank of my Enfield and fill additionally a can of 10 liters that I carry on my bike. I drive towards the highest motorable pass of the world. The peak I hope to reach is at over 5'600 meters! At the first police checkpoint on the way up, the road is blocked. An accident is the reason. While waiting there is even some icefall. I try to get some information from an army officer. Apparently a car went off the road and fell down for 15 meters. 3 people died and 3 were badly injured. The rescue at altitudes of over 5'000 meters seems to be complicated. After 2 hours they reopen the road. The last 15 km towards the peak are a little bit challenging. The road is not paved and wet. I finally reach the peak. On the way down the scenery is completely different and I start to stop too many times to take pictures. The Nubra Valley seems to belong to another planet, the Nubra planet! Also downhill the first 15 kilometers are tricky, I have also to pass through small rivers. In the valley the road is surprisingly good and in the early evening I reach the planned destination. I am really looking forward for the next days in this amazing valley!
