Meeting latino gangsters

Day 276, Colombia, Cali

Well sometimes you do experiences that you necessarily want to do. Cali is world's 7th most violent and dangerous city and now I also know that it is true. Let me explain you today's story. I walk along the historic downtown of Cali with a lovely german couple. We find these small parks that are connected with bridges. We are happy to see some green in a noisy and chaotic city. At the end of the park we are walking through there is this beautiful church. We try to reach the church in order to take some pictures. There are not a lot of people in this park. We cross a small bridge, a huge black guy walks towards us on the bridge. He starts to chat friendly with us and we talk with him. He starts to walk with us on the bridge. I have a slightly strange feeling that I want to ignore, but fortunately I don't ignore, as I learned from my bad experience in Africa. The bridge has to exit points. A guy with a red shirt walks towards the left exit point and stands in order that we can't go out on that side. He shortly says something to the black guy and I realize that they know each other. I increase my pace and try to get off the bridge. In that moment I see two other guys walking towards the right exit. Eventually I get off and just at the exit of the bridge I cross a homeless man that tells me something in a fast Spanish. I imagine that we have to pay attention at those guys. I am off the bridge, the germans aren't. The german girl calls my name and tells me to be aware that the black guy is armed with a long and sharp piece of glass. He walks towards me but I can go off his way. At that moment the police is coming towards us on a motorbike. They ask us if everything is okay and I tell them that we have the impression that something was going on. The police takes us and the three guys apart. The black guy disappeared somehow, somewhere. The german girl explains that the black guy who was walking next to her asked her to open the bag and when she denied he said aggressively that he wants money and takes with his left hand this weapon out of his pants. Exactly at that moment the police drives towards us and the party is over. A traffic officer wad observing us and the whole situation and told to two police officers to go and check. As the other three guys deny everything and are not armed the police let them go. We continue our walk towards the church and we see again this black guy, again walking towards us, again looking aggressively. We turn back towards the police officers, we reach them and tell them about the guy. Eventually they catch him, eventually he is not armed anymore. Anyway, they take him to the police station and register the case. We are happy, at least his afternoon is over and we still have everything. Sometimes you are lucky, sometimes you aren't.
