Day 165, India, Varanasi, Bus Ride Day 2
I finally arrive at Gorakhpur at 1.30 am. Everybody has to go out of the bus except for me. In his poor english the bus driver explains me that we will sleep now and at 4 o'clock drive towards Varanasi. He sleeps on the top of the bus, while I am sleeping inside. It is burning hot, dirty, full of mosquitos, but at least I can sleep for free and feel safe. At 4.30 am I got up. The ticket officer tries to wake up the bus driver but he refuses to stand up and continues to sleep. Finally after 5 o'clock I decide to look for another bus. I finally arrive at 13.00 pm in Varanasi after a horrible 27 hours journey in the heat of overfilled public buses. A reason why I choose to sleep in a nice plays over my usual Indian budget of 3-6 USD per night. The place is situated over a Ghat and I have /C in my room! A good thing as the temperatures are at 43 degrees. After hanging out I decide to have a walk. I am admiring the burning station at one of the Ghats. Dead people are being burned publicly in the middle of people and goats and cows and their remnant parts thrown into the holy river of Ganges while a few meters behind there are small children jumping into the same water, while laughing and playing. This is the perfect picture of India, a land full of contrasts.
