A wonderful drive

Day 180, India, Laddakh, Leh

I stand up at 2 am to catch the minibus that will bring me to Leh. It is one of the most challenging and dangerous roads of the world. I pass through 5 different passes of the Himalaya and cross several glaciers. The first few hours I try to sleep. At 6 am the scenery seems already the one of another planet. At the first break the young Indians and even my bus driver already start to smoke some joints. In a worldtrip you get used to everything. The road is amazing and criminal on the same time. The way of driving is just criminal. At lunch break the young Indians empty a whole bottle of Rum and continue their joint process and this at an altitude of 5'000 meters. In the afternoon we reach the peak of the day of over 5'300 meters. My backseat breaks down and I have to survive the next 8 bumpy hours without a backseat. The driver asks for some more joints, maybe he is feeling a little bit tired. The guy in front of me is vomiting since half an hour, but when I ask him if we shall stops he replies that everything is okay. Apparently he didn't enjoyed the mix of a long ride, the altitude, the drugs and the alcohol. Finally at 20pm we reach Leh. The driver drove for 18 hours while smoking joints on the second most difficult road of the world. And I am still alive.
