Day 198, Malawi, Nkhata Bay
PICTURE INFECTED BY A VIRUS :-(
The lodge where I am staying is at the same time an NGO, which supports the local community. Traveling in Africa cuts you out of the local community. Lodges belong to foreigners and are for foreigners. Locals don't have a shop or restaurant culture and live quite auto sufficient. Therefore I am spending my time mostly with other tourists. Many of them are volunteering or involved in human organizations. As all infrastructure is being created for foreigners, prices are much higher than in Asia. The very limited variety of local products is on the other hand very cheap. People produce a high quantity of a low variety of vegetables. The issue is that the products are only sold in the local market and they have no export market or infrastructure to sell their products in other areas of the country. While walking through the market you can observe many onions and tomatoes that have to be thrown away, as the vendors have not been able to sell them. The situation of this country is desolate. It seems also complicated to help them in a sustainable way.
